Wait...WHAT? Have I got this right?

Do I understand correctly that Six Apart has been suspending the journals of those posting about their past history of sexual abuse? That they are suspending locked communities where consenting adults are engaged in age-play? All this in the name of catching pedophiles (who we all know are really over at MySpace anyway)? ;-]


Once again I'll go on record as saying I'm against pedophilia.
But is this right?
I mean, I know they can do it. But I think we all expected that they'd be a bit more discriminating and go after people who are actually a danger to children.

Funny, I've always taken a no age-play stance in my own comm [livejournal.com profile] erotillectuals, and people used to get lippy with me about it. No more I suppose. LJ agrees with MEEEEEE!

Seriously though, WTF?

And also, I'm becoming more and more resigned to the fact that it isn't so much about catching people who are actually a danger as it is just making as many people as possible miserable. [headdesk]

And yeah, this latest travesty on LJ's part has me wondering if I want to stay around here. This latest crisis was so poorly handled. I hear good things about GreatestJournal. Everything's free, and you get 2,000 (!) icons! But, I don't know.

I don't think I'm going anywhere. But I am concerned that they suspended people before giving them a chance to remove offensive content. That's messed up.

*nods* Totally messed up. And as I mentioned on my journal, all their actions do is send the bad people further underground. Who knows how many real investigations against real perps got ruined because of this.

I think it's sad that whenever the topic of pedophilia is discussed people have to state that they are opposed to it. I can't imagine associating with someone who would actualy admit to NOT opposing it.

True. I have argued with several people who presume I don't care about children getting hurt because I don't support say, neighborhood watch posters with people's names and addresses on them. Pedophiles are people and until they do something wrong, they are not guilty.

Those lists are a product of our own inability to reform people who would harm others.

We can't keep you in prison any longer, but we can't guarantee that you won't harm anyone. So the best thing to do is release you into the public and then tell everyone who lives near you that you are a bad person and that they shouldn't associate with you. That should help you become a productive member of society.
Or something like that.

Of course I might be more open minded about the lists if they were in any way accurate.

I read a news bit recently about a lady who served alcohol to minors, had sex with two minors, and then had 13 drunk teenagers leave her house all in the same SUV which they crashed. Thankfully no one was killed.

Her punishment is 300 days in jail. And she doesn't even have to register as a sex offender. The parents of the two boys she screwed are, well, enraged. But I've heard of a case a few years ago where a 12yo played I'll show you mine if you show me yours and got registered as a sexual predator. And of course with these lists being mirrored and copied even if he eventually gets removed from the government list, the private directories have poor oversite.

Well right, just because you're on the sex offender list doesn't have to mean you're a predatory pedophile. And NOT being on the list certainly doesn't mean you're safe.
